<abstract xml:lang="ru">

The article presents the results of a theoretical and empirical study of the contribution of metaphors to the development of metacognitive knowledge about an academic subject among university students. The theoretical analysis demonstrates that the cognitive theory of metaphor by J.R.R. Tolkien can become the methodological basis for using metaphors as a means of improving students' metacognitive knowledge. Lakoff and M. Johnson. An overview is given of works where metaphors have been used as a tool for developing metacognitive knowledge in the practice of psychocorrective work, as well as educational research. The main limitation of these papers is their qualitative nature and the relatively small number of study participants. In this regard, the empirical part of the study solved the problem of finding quantitative characteristics of the productivity of using metaphors as a means of constructing declarative metacognitive knowledge by students. The following results were obtained: (1) indicators of productivity in the use of metaphors are weakly or negatively correlated with the scales of the MAI metacognitive awareness questionnaire; (2) factor analysis of metaphorization productivity indicators has shown two relatively independent ways of encoding metaphors: verbal and visual; (3) these methods of generating metaphorical constructions can be explained within the framework of the theory of double coding; (4) metaphorization productivity indicators corresponding to visual metaphors positively correlate with academic performance; (5) The data obtained on the contribution of metaphorization processes to the creation of metacognitive knowledge about an educational subject opens up the possibility of constructing metacognitive learning procedures focused on various ways of encoding information.
