<abstract xml:lang="ru">

Background: social media has become an important part of everyday life, but excessive use can lead to addictive behavior. The prevalence of social media addiction across different age and social groups remains a pressing issue. Objective: to determine the level of addiction on the use of social networks and identify its relationship with the socio-demographic characteristics of respondents. Methods: an anonymous cross-sectional survey was conducted using Google Forms among residents of the Rostov Region and the Republic of Crimea. The Russian-language adaptation of the Social Media Disorder Scale (SMDS) was used to assess addiction. The χ² test and Cramer's V coefficient of association were used for statistical analysis. Results: a total of 314 people participated in the study. Social media addiction was detected in 37,2 % of respondents. The highest rate was recorded among adolescents aged 15–17 (60 %). Females demonstrated addiction statistically significantly more often than males (40,8 % versus 28,6 %, p < 0,05). The relationship between gender and addiction was moderate (V = 0,12), while the relationship between age and addiction was stronger (V = 0,20). Factors such as education, marital status, income, occupation, work experience, and place of residence showed no significant associations. Notably, 80,6 % of respondents reported using social media to relieve stress and negative emotions. Conclusion: the results indicate a high prevalence of social media addiction, particularly among adolescents and women. Using social media as a means of emotional release may represent a key mechanism in the development of addiction.
